The History of Taekwondo:
Taekwondo is a martial art that originated from Korea over 2000 years ago. It is now the national sport of South Korea and has become one of the most popular martial arts throughout the world. It was developed as a method of self defence that is unarmed and balances physical skill with mental discipline. Although Taekwondo is steeped in history the actual word is relatively new and is the sign of unification of practices. ‘Tae’ roughly translates to ‘to strike or break with foot’, ‘Kwon’ means ‘to strike or break with fist’ and ‘Do’ in English means ‘way, method or art’ which when together explains that Taekwondo is an art where you kick and punch; it uses the entire body rather than certain parts of it like in other martial arts or contact sports.
